Artist's Statement

The combination of 'illusion and reality', a method often used in theatre, is the focus of Yun's work. This 'Scenographic' approach aims to provide an opportunity where the illusion may become reality, allowing the imagination to fly, even just for a few moments, to go where it wasn't meant to go.

For the installation 'Entranxit', Yun and two other artists created a long Perspex rectangular tunnel with one door for each side. The audience were encouraged to walk through it and experience various moments of transition using lights and choreographed stage performances. These 'walks' in this timeless magical environment created an expansion of moments of enter and exit, moments that are impossible to separate from the rest of 'real life'.

A labyrinth in a hot summer park with snow at its centre or a tree with steps built around its trunk to allow viewers to take a closer look at the children's wishes hanging on the branches are other examples of environments designed to bring the viewers back to a state of childish expectation. It is work created to break the boundaries of the impossible and create a temporary bridge between reality and illusion.

Her work is made to excite the imagination of the viewers, make it flow and expand beyond what is considered possible in ordinary life.

Biography

Yun Ko was born in South Korea and studied and worked as a sculptor in Seoul. Since Yun Ko moved to London she has studied her MA in Scenography at Central St. Martins College of Art & Design, graduating in 1998.

The theme of her work is the exploration of the boundaries between art and theatre. She started studying this topic with her graduation show 'The wall' and her first funded installation 'Entranxit' - invited to Exit 99 festival in Sweden (Kivik). The following year 'Entranxit' was commissioned and exhibited at the Watershed Arts Centre in Bristol.

Recently she has been commissioned to work on a site specific installation for Signal 2003 and also a community art project as part of the '6000 chairs art festival'. Currently she is working on 'Ghost Palace', a large scale site specific installation using water screens and light projection to recreate the old Crystal Palace silhouette at the site where it once stood.
