Artist's Statement
Sean uses varying degrees of abstraction to achieve a strong formal and graphic image. Vertical and horizontal lines are used to represent the structures (or boundaries) of urban experience. His approach to photography combines sociological references, with a coherent and often idealistic visual language. Working within the modernist tradition, he draws inspiration from photographers such as Bernd & Hilla Becher, Lewis Baltz, Andreas Gursky and Matthias Hoch.
Sean's photography goes beyond the intimate, casual and autobiographical approach favoured by many contemporary art photographers. His work, often presented within a grid structure, reflects the slowing down of photography and its movement towards contemplation.
Biography
