Artist's Statement

Drawing and painting has been Sandy's passion for most of her life. The urge to put down the images she sees that move and excite her is very strong. Whilst bringing up her children she was constantly painting in her head, but had no time in practice to work in colour, so did much sketching, well disciplined, mostly in pen and ink. She enjoyed sketching people in all circumstances from the beach to the park and in jazz venues which led to many portrait commissions. Working now in pastels and oils she also includes detailed animal portraits in her portfolio. The love of wildlife, plants and flowers also directed her interest into botanical subjects usually executed in waterproof and light fast liquid acrylics which she has mastered over ten years. Her portraits are colourful and free with great emphasis on likeness and character, more towards a picture than strictly a portrait. In contrast her botanical illustrations are tight, accurate to detail, controlled, yet lively.

Biography

Sandy Constantine was born in Frome, Somerset and is married with two grown up children and grandchildren and has lived in Upper Sydenham for over thirty years. At thirteen she won a scholarship to Willesden Technical College of Art and later attended Winchester School of Art, finally specialising in illustration. Having taken time out to raise her two children she re-kindled her interest in art, particularly portraits in oil and pastel. A strong interest in botanical subjects led back towards the illustrational side of her work, illustrating books on the Isle of Man Tramways, artwork for the The Watercress Steam Railway brochures as well as theatre posters. Exhibits widely in London and the South East and has undertaken many resulting commissions.
