Artist's Statement
Mary is interested in the way light animates an object, making the light and the object become something from nothing. Her paintings on paper and canvas are of shells, fruit, and other natural forms. They explore and reveal the nature of colour, its abstract and transient qualities. Some of the pieces have titles such as 'Lemon Moon' or 'Black Lemon', which she hopes imply hidden associations or stories to be imagined. Mary continues to learn and observe the strengths and pleasure art can give people of all ages through her studio practice, exhibitions, artists' residencies and workshops.
Biography
Since graduating from Birmingham Art School in 1986 with a BA (Hons) degree, Mary has been working as an artist and exhibiting in London and Kent. Originally a sculptor based at the Unit 7 Arts Studios, Camberwell, she now specializes in acrylic paintings on paper and canvas. A PGCE in Arts Education at the Institute of Education, London, enabled her to develop her practice through workshops and part-time teaching.
