Artist's Statement
"There is a problem in admitting to someone that you are a physicist, apart from either being tarnished with the ghost of Oppenheimer or having provoked a look of boredom, it's that you are constantly aware of the limitations of words."
Scientists and artists alike make connections between things; whether it is data and hypothesis or imagery and the human condition, the creative process is much the same and aims to enlighten and improve our understanding of the world.
This is the motivation behind Jasmine's work having spent time both as a research scientist and practising artist. Her work attempts to address the increasingly symbiotic relationship between the two disciplines by finding some way of visually illustrating important scientific principles, such as quantum mechanics, within a philosophical framework.
Currently through sponsorship and technical support from London South Bank University and Dulux Paints, she has constructed a simple painting machine. Involving pendulae, motors and paint, artist and machine produce figures analogous to the outer layers of electrons orbiting the nucleus of an atom. Interestingly, the construction and use of the machine has thrown up fundamental questions regarding process and surface so that the machine is no longer purely about 'referential' reproduction but has become an installation in its own right.
Jasmine continues to investigate the use of simple machines and physical processes as means of visual representation.

Biography
Jasmine has recently followed a science PhD from UCL with a BA in fine art (graduating 2006). Drawing on her knowledge of contemporary physics and art her installations and paintings explore the possible connections between these disciplines and the ultimate nature of reality.
Her cross-disciplinary approach is continued in the training she offers teachers and workshops she runs for children through her company Proeducation.
