Artist's Statement

Carlos Cortes' performances involve very often audience participation, with an emphasis in movement and spatial concerns and using interactive and visual elements.

His paintings are witty and humorous. They combine a realistic technique with a surreal world full of colour and fantasy. He paints on recycled materials, objects which have had a previous life in contact with other people.

He's very interested in human activities and the traces left by them, and in the possibilities of art as a regenerating force, as an arena for social interaction.

Biography

Carlos Cortes was born in Zaragoza, Spain in 1964.

He studied Dance and Linguistics in Spain and Theatre Design in the UK.

Carlos Cortes currently works as a visual and performing artist, and his work has been exhibited, published and performed in several European countries and in the USA.

He regularly exhibits his paintings and installations. He creates and directs his own performances and he designs sets and costumes for other companies. He has also curated and organized art events.
