Artist's Statement
The work is generated from ideas of exposure and protection, arising from contemplation of land reclaimed from the sea: the land is transformed, given a kind of permanence but a threat of inundation is always present. Apart from the metaphorical resonance this image has for me, I'm interested in the way such technological interventions in the landscape act to define perceptions of nature, of identity and the meaning of work. Somehow the making of things, like paintings or houses, counterbalances feelings of redundancy and futility in the face of the technological action. And the making is itself a reflection on technology: a thing at once enabling and controlling. Artists who have influenced my work and ideas include: Philip Guston, Jonathan Lasker, Alan Davie, Gordon Matta-Clark, Giorgio De Chirico, Basil Beattie, Tom Ellis and Matthais Weischer.
